Freelance peek-a-boo!

Freelance has been pretty kind to me in 2012 (thus far), let's keep it that way! So let's take a look back at a couple of freelance projects I did in 2011!

Carmel Crawford's Mike Rochip!
Carmel Crawford is a writer from Ireland with an interesting property & character named, Mike Rochip! If you were to throw Tin-Tin, Iron Man, and Tron into a blender, then your smoothie of a cartoon would be Mike Rochip. It's got the right blend of action & comedy and I'm proud to have lent my services to it.
I worked with Richard Lewis & writer Stephen Sustarsic closely and was responsible for designing all the main characters as well as producing and laying out the Mike Rochip pitch packet. (*Interested producers & animation development execs: I can put you in touch w/ Carmel and can send you the Mike Rochip pitch packet if you'd like to see it! email me at jeauxj(at)gmail(dot)com!)
Mike Rochip started his life online as roving reporter, Mike Rofone! He looked very different in those days compared to my reboot designs! He was an actual Microphone!
Then:

From L to R: Amy, Indie, Mike Rofone, Harry Broadhead, Jason Ratz, Viper Virus!

From online, Carmel was then able to make the jump to publishing Mike Rofone as a children's book!

Now:

My new Mike Rochip Reboot lineup!

The new Viper Virus!

Here's the Mike Rochip storyboard animatic for "The Big Dumb Down" Pilot episode!

You can view other Mike Rochip fun stuff, HERE.
A couple words from Carmel:
"Well, what can I say? You are a very talented artist who worked in very well with the conceptualization of my ideas. I would recommend you to anyone who wants something different, 'off the wall' and fun."
I had such a blast working on this w/ Carmel, Richard, and Stephen! Here's hoping we'll see this on TV in the near future!
You can find Carmel on Twitter, and also Carmel Crawford was the creator of the Mike Rochip project and that as such, owns all copyrights.

Another fun freelance project I got to work on was for my friend's father, Jim Stein, and his Playground Safety Inspection company, Play Safe Inspection!
As a kid, I always loved going to playgrounds. But back then it was usually hot metal where you'd burn your hand or a hot metal slide where you'd burn your little tush. These days kids have the durable, heavy duty plastic playgrounds w/ that cool spongy, rubber floor! It's Jim's job to make sure all those items are safe and on the right levels for kids to truly enjoy themselves (and not get hurt!)

This logo image will be used for thumb drives Jim will give to his clients.

Jim is going to be using this image for his website banner and letterheads!

This image will be used for the Playground Association's magazine for Southern California!

Have a playground in your area, or want to look up safety tips? Visit Jim's page today!
Thanks Jim & Carmel! BTW, I am available for freelance, so please hook a brother up!
See the side-bar to get in touch, or the Jeaux Janovsky links for more info. ;)

Thanks!

She'll be receiving a few of my mini-comics in the mail as a teeny, tiny prize, along w/ internet bragging rights! Thanks Erin! Check out Erin's Tumblr, her art is pretty cool!

Here's a couple Joe Barbera studies. The purple pencil sketch one is my least favorite. At first I was hesitant to put it up, but I figured I would try to lose my anxiety about putting up art that doesn't quite hit the mark for me and at the same time, share some of my process w/ you guys and gals.
I felt I was beginning to grasp Joe, as the 2nd Joe Study can attest to. I went w/ the Joe on the bottom right for my final, and the final came out pretty great!
Fred really seemed to like it too!

Here's my sketch studies of Bill Hanna & pals! Bill is pretty fun to draw and is such a character, himself! I've been reading his book, A Cast of Friends, and so far it's been a sincere pleasure to read!
I did the column sketchbook drawings of Bill (in tux and a goofy younger Bill) while waiting for Ava while she was running an errand at a tailor's place in my sketchbook. I like how those came out a bunch.
It's been a hectic week w/ lots of weirdness scattered about, so please bear w/ me.
During the next few days I plan on dedicating a blog post to my mentor & hero during my time at Calarts, the great Corny Cole, who passed away this Monday. I have a ton of original scans of his work I'd love to post up for people to see. RIP to my hero Corny Cole. "Draw Dammit!"
I'm also planning on posting up a few "rejected" Original Cartoon Heroes Chuck Jones pieces I did that Fred was just not feeling. And for the best too! Fred really knows his stuff, and what works!
Believe it!
Look for those in the next few days, here or on Frederator.com's Lunchbreak.
And just another friendly neighborhood reminder that I am always on the lookout for some freelance! Nothing is too big or small for me, so don't be afraid to ask. I am available for freelance of any artistic sort.

Illustration, Comics, Animation, character design, storyboards, comedy writing, etc.

If you are, or if you know of anyone, looking for any one of those things that need to be filled, send them, or yourself, my way. My info is over on the left hand side-bar, in the splendid Jeaux Janovsky Links section!

Thanks all!

Original Cartoon Heroes: Book Research

Screw the internet, we're going OLD School Technology.

Books!

Out of the Inkwell: Max Fleischer
This is a great read.

King of Cartoons: Tex Avery
Had a tough time finding this doozy. Thankfully, Fred scored me a copy. :)

My Life in Toons: Joe Barbera
Read this a few years ago, it was pretty good then. I'm sure a re-read will prove it's still holds up.

A Cast of Friends: Bill Hanna
Looking forward to reading this one.

Original Cartoon Heroes: "Tex Avery" Behind the Art

Doing research on Tex Avery for Original Cartoon Heroes, and I cannot for the life of me find any good photos of him online. Too small, or he's looking away from the camera. I even tried my local library branch, but the 2 books I needed are in Reference and not available for check out. Bummed!
Luckily, Fred is ordering me the books off of Amazon! Thanks Fred! :)
In the meantime, here are a few studies of Tex I did.

Original Cartoon Heroes: "Bakshi Studies" Behind the Art

For those of you not in the know, I've been working on a dream freelance project w/ Fred Seibert of Frederator on a postcard tribute series, named Original Cartoon Heroes.
Fred & I came up with a list of Animation Legends, and I'm very proud to pay tribute & give homage to these Greats in my style.
Above you will see my studies for Ralph Bakshi. The only one of the list who is still with us, still painting, still drawing, still stirring the Animation stew (and adding a lot of pepper and hot sauce while he's at it!)
Ralph Bakshi is a hero of mine, and I am pleased to say that he's using an early incarnation of my Original Cartoon Heroes tributes as his personal Facebook Avatar still! For that, I am honored beyond belief!
I can't wait to share the new version I've done w/ him!

Thank you Ralph.

Thank you Fred.

Thanks to Cartoons.

Fish Poop Show!

Hi gang! (and Luke!)

Just wanted to share a fishy, fun promo for Fish Poop, a new, cartoona-web series idea I’ve been toying around with recently, w/ y’all!

(yes, really.)

I also made a fun, little fish skinned youtube page for it. All that’s up is this Fish Poop promo right now, but episodes should start rolling out soon.

Check it out, HERE.

Things are gettin' pretty heavy duty as I've begun writing outlines for episodes, lining up voice actors, and even have a Fish Poop Show theme song in the works being composed by a composer pal of mine!

(yes, I wrote lyrics.)

(yes, really.)

I’m super stoked about it, and excited to see where I take these little dudes!

Keep your eyeballs glued here for fishy updates!

Smells fishy in here,
-Jeaux

This little, lonely, happy-go-lucky, rotund furball needs a home. He's a rejected design from a recent freelance project I did some sample art for. Does anyone want to adopt him for a cartoon or 2?
