An Update of Sorts

Hi!
I've been a busy bee. Neglectful of this poor little blog. So, I've decided to dust it off, and make a new entry letting you all know what I've been up to as of late.
My major passion projects for 2013 are both in the realm of comics. Los Animales is in the webcomic arena, and Epilogue is in the traditional comic book arena. I'm super excited for both, and have been working super hard on them. Simultaneously.
Los Animales is a new webcomic about Music, Animals, and Broken Hearts. Basically, it's a soap opera type comic about hipster animals who (hardly) work at a record store, called Animal Sounds!
I co-created Los Animales with my friend Liz Ohanesian, who I've known since we were both 15 in highschool. Yes, really! I'm honored to be working alongside her, and couldn't ask for a better collaborator. She's a super talented writer, DJ, and I love her snarky sense of humor. Must be a “Valley” thing.

We recently completed Los Animales' debut chapter: Fours on the Floor, which you can now read in it's furcovered entirety! Chapter 1 clocked in at about 50 pages. I am insanely proud of the work I've been doing on Los Animales, and I really feel it shows. For a brand new webcomic on the block by a couple of n00bs like us, we've gotten some fairly good press and interviews. MTV Geek, Defective Geeks, Geeksmash, IANYAN mag, Drawn, etc. Our brand new webcomic can't even crawl yet, so thank you everyone for your support! It truly means a lot. :)
We also just soft launched Los Animales Chapter 2: NADARAVE! Here's the cover for it. We were going for a post-apocalyptic feel for the cover. What is Nadarave? We're about 8 pages into their tale if you wanna find out. Click here to read: NADARAVE

Speaking of things of a Post-apocalyptic nature, that brings me to Epilogue. Epilogue is a project I'm working on with my good friend, Daniel Levitch. Daniel has his own comic company, Ancient Squid Media and is no stranger to the comics industry. He's also director of Swine, a post-apocalyptic series of shorts with a steampunk aesthetic. He's currently working on turning Swine into a feature length film, and I couldn't be more excited for him!

The most I'm gonna say about Epilogue is that it's a 22 page comic about post-apocalyptic roaches. Daniel is a very talented writer, director, storyteller in whichever media he chooses. I'm very thrilled to be working on this project with him, and we're planning on debuting it at San Diego Comic-con 2013! I know it's gonna get a lot of attention, as it's a unique idea that truly deserves it. Here's what I can show you, a character lineup of some of the main characters in Epilogue. They'd make rad toys!

The comic is actually going to be a Prologue to Epilogue! A perfect introduction to the tale. Thanks for bringing me along for the ride, Daniel!

Combine all this w/ freelance work, and you'll figure out that I'm feeling like a bit of a madman right now. On the freelancery front, I'm currently a design consultant on a “top secret” project for Topps, the card company. I couldn't be prouder of the work I've been doing for them, and word is around the office their brand guys and high-ups dig my stuff! I've also been doing a bit of occasional word processing and graphic design work for a company called Inspector Playground. They inspect and check the safety of children playgrounds. I also designed their logo.

There are other freelance projects weaving their way into my life, brain, and hands soon, but I'll tell you about those when they come closer to materializing. That said, I am always on the lookout for freelance work. Get in touch with me if you, or someone you know is looking for someone like me for a freelance gig. I'd appreciate it.
Crazily yours,

Freelance peek-a-boo!

Freelance has been pretty kind to me in 2012 (thus far), let's keep it that way! So let's take a look back at a couple of freelance projects I did in 2011!

Carmel Crawford's Mike Rochip!
Carmel Crawford is a writer from Ireland with an interesting property & character named, Mike Rochip! If you were to throw Tin-Tin, Iron Man, and Tron into a blender, then your smoothie of a cartoon would be Mike Rochip. It's got the right blend of action & comedy and I'm proud to have lent my services to it.
I worked with Richard Lewis & writer Stephen Sustarsic closely and was responsible for designing all the main characters as well as producing and laying out the Mike Rochip pitch packet. (*Interested producers & animation development execs: I can put you in touch w/ Carmel and can send you the Mike Rochip pitch packet if you'd like to see it! email me at jeauxj(at)gmail(dot)com!)
Mike Rochip started his life online as roving reporter, Mike Rofone! He looked very different in those days compared to my reboot designs! He was an actual Microphone!
Then:

From L to R: Amy, Indie, Mike Rofone, Harry Broadhead, Jason Ratz, Viper Virus!

From online, Carmel was then able to make the jump to publishing Mike Rofone as a children's book!

Now:

My new Mike Rochip Reboot lineup!

The new Viper Virus!

Here's the Mike Rochip storyboard animatic for "The Big Dumb Down" Pilot episode!

You can view other Mike Rochip fun stuff, HERE.
A couple words from Carmel:
"Well, what can I say? You are a very talented artist who worked in very well with the conceptualization of my ideas. I would recommend you to anyone who wants something different, 'off the wall' and fun."
I had such a blast working on this w/ Carmel, Richard, and Stephen! Here's hoping we'll see this on TV in the near future!
You can find Carmel on Twitter, and also Carmel Crawford was the creator of the Mike Rochip project and that as such, owns all copyrights.

Another fun freelance project I got to work on was for my friend's father, Jim Stein, and his Playground Safety Inspection company, Play Safe Inspection!
As a kid, I always loved going to playgrounds. But back then it was usually hot metal where you'd burn your hand or a hot metal slide where you'd burn your little tush. These days kids have the durable, heavy duty plastic playgrounds w/ that cool spongy, rubber floor! It's Jim's job to make sure all those items are safe and on the right levels for kids to truly enjoy themselves (and not get hurt!)

This logo image will be used for thumb drives Jim will give to his clients.

Jim is going to be using this image for his website banner and letterheads!

This image will be used for the Playground Association's magazine for Southern California!

Have a playground in your area, or want to look up safety tips? Visit Jim's page today!
Thanks Jim & Carmel! BTW, I am available for freelance, so please hook a brother up!
See the side-bar to get in touch, or the Jeaux Janovsky links for more info. ;)

Thanks!

I felt I was beginning to grasp Joe, as the 2nd Joe Study can attest to. I went w/ the Joe on the bottom right for my final, and the final came out pretty great!
Fred really seemed to like it too!

I did the column sketchbook drawings of Bill (in tux and a goofy younger Bill) while waiting for Ava while she was running an errand at a tailor's place in my sketchbook. I like how those came out a bunch.
It's been a hectic week w/ lots of weirdness scattered about, so please bear w/ me.
During the next few days I plan on dedicating a blog post to my mentor & hero during my time at Calarts, the great Corny Cole, who passed away this Monday. I have a ton of original scans of his work I'd love to post up for people to see. RIP to my hero Corny Cole. "Draw Dammit!"
I'm also planning on posting up a few "rejected" Original Cartoon Heroes Chuck Jones pieces I did that Fred was just not feeling. And for the best too! Fred really knows his stuff, and what works!
Believe it!
Look for those in the next few days, here or on Frederator.com's Lunchbreak.
And just another friendly neighborhood reminder that I am always on the lookout for some freelance! Nothing is too big or small for me, so don't be afraid to ask. I am available for freelance of any artistic sort.

Illustration, Comics, Animation, character design, storyboards, comedy writing, etc.

If you are, or if you know of anyone, looking for any one of those things that need to be filled, send them, or yourself, my way. My info is over on the left hand side-bar, in the splendid Jeaux Janovsky Links section!

Thanks all!

Original Cartoon Heroes: "Tex Avery" Behind the Art

Doing research on Tex Avery for Original Cartoon Heroes, and I cannot for the life of me find any good photos of him online. Too small, or he's looking away from the camera. I even tried my local library branch, but the 2 books I needed are in Reference and not available for check out. Bummed!
Luckily, Fred is ordering me the books off of Amazon! Thanks Fred! :)
In the meantime, here are a few studies of Tex I did.

Original Cartoon Heroes: "Bakshi Studies" Behind the Art

For those of you not in the know, I've been working on a dream freelance project w/ Fred Seibert of Frederator on a postcard tribute series, named Original Cartoon Heroes.
Fred & I came up with a list of Animation Legends, and I'm very proud to pay tribute & give homage to these Greats in my style.
Above you will see my studies for Ralph Bakshi. The only one of the list who is still with us, still painting, still drawing, still stirring the Animation stew (and adding a lot of pepper and hot sauce while he's at it!)
Ralph Bakshi is a hero of mine, and I am pleased to say that he's using an early incarnation of my Original Cartoon Heroes tributes as his personal Facebook Avatar still! For that, I am honored beyond belief!
I can't wait to share the new version I've done w/ him!

Thank you Ralph.

Thank you Fred.

Thanks to Cartoons.

Original Cartoon Heroes

Chuck Jones art originally posted March 24th, 2008 for Channel Frederator.

I've recently been commissioned by Fred Seibert to create a series of postcard tribute art of Original Cartoon Heroes, based off a few Refrederator illustrations I did a few years ago while working w/ Fred on Channel Frederator in NY.

I've been having a blast creating the recent pieces and it's been rekindling my love affair w/ cartoons again.

This will be my "Love Letter" to Cartoons.

Thanks Fred!

Keep your eyeballs glued here, as I'll be posting other Original Cartoon Heroes images, sketches, and behind the art goodies.

Swine Time!

Recently, I had the pleasure of doing some freelance for my pal Daniel Levitch's film company, Well-Oiled Machine and their property: the Swine trilogy.

Daniel thought I'd be a good fit for creating the illustrations for the DVD covers to each trilogy installment, I think he was right!

Daniel & I both love the B/W work of Tim Bradstreet, and used his style as an inspirational springboard for the design sensibility of the cover illos.

My process was easily complicated.

  • Daniel gave me a few pics to use of his actors.
  • Once I found my choices, I brought the pics into photoshop and manipulated them into something that sort of resembled a B/W photocopy machine look.
  • I toyed around w/ laying out and arranging the pics and shared the mockups w/ Daniel.
  • Once Daniel okayed the mockups, I printed out the B/W characters on separate pages and prepared them for the hand drawn inking process.
  • I taped the images to my lightbox and went to work w/ my sharpies and ink pens.
  • I rescanned the inked characters and brought them back into photoshop and placed them in their proper areas, the same areas as when I layed them out for mockups.
  • I sent Daniel & his friend Koren the PSD files and they created the final DVD covers.

I haven't had a chance to check out the final look, but I'm sure they did an awesome job. Pretty excited because Daniel & the rest of Well-Oiled Machine will be debuting Swine at Comic-Con this year!

Åsa Wallander as Wallace

Kelley Gallagher as Cahill

Kellsy MacKilligan as Mercedes

Jackie Becker as Amelia

Alanna Brown as Renn

Emily Chetner as Beck

Chris Wiley as Nixon

Gregory Lee Kenyon as Erickson

Thanks for letting me be a part of Swine, Daniel! I'm sure it'll kick loads of ass, bud.

To check out Swine, head over to the film's site: swinefilm.com, watch the trailer, here, friend & like 'em over at the official Swine Facebook page!

Good to be the King!

Yo,
Couple good things poppin' off in the Jeaux pipe-line:

My Joe Murray/Kaboing Congratulatory Piece wound up on his personal journal on none other than my Birthday, March 17th!!!
Here's what he had to say:

You can check it out here too! http://joemurraystudio.com/blog/?p=2711
Pretty cool, eh?
It was a very great way to cap off an already epic & great birthday! Many thanks Joe!
You should go check out Kaboing TV, the 2nd episode of Frog in a Suit is out for your perusal.

I'll also post it here, cause Joe is just so darn nice for posting about lil yours truly!

I'm finishing up on a bit of freelance back to back. Wish I could show off a few glimpses of sneak peeks from the projects, but I'd better keep em under wraps for the moment. I'm sure you'll be hearing about them, soon as I get word I can spread some images and info around.

I recently had a great time on my birthday, Mar.17th-18th, spending it at Disneyland and staying at the D-Land hotel w/ my gf, Ava.

Outside Fake Gallery, a location for Dreamworld

The day before my b-day, I spent it by acting in a small scene in my pal Whit's feature film, Dreamworld. IMDB page here: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1853548/ Met lots of great people on that shoot, and was happy they let me be a small part of it. Whit sorta based his character off of me, so you'll be seeing a bunch of my stuff in it!
According to Dreamworld director Ryan Darst:
"Thanks for coming out on Wednesday. Your scene is already the stuff of legend."
:D
Here's the Dreamworld teaser trailer:

DREAMWORLD Teaser from SNEAK ATTACK on Vimeo.

Got a bunch of other things on the horizon and in the works! Workin' on setting up doin' a bunch of animated music vids for friends once freelance lets up.
One I'm proud to mention is my boy Weapon X, whom I've proudly known since our early days at Blockbuster together. He's layin' down some genuine, true hip hop and I can't wait to see what type of concepts we'll come up with!
Here's a recent vid of his you should all peep out.

Back to the drawing board lab for more Freelancin' Romancin'! BTW, I am available for freelance, so please hook a brother up!
See the side-bar to get in touch, or for more info. ;)
